The Mostly Pros of Natural Birth Control - And a Few Cons
Guestpert: Gina Cloud
Category: Woman's Issues

Speaking Point: Most women welcome the idea of being able to choose when or if to become pregnant. The mainstream option for this tends to be exclusively the birth control pill, or other chemical/hormonal forms of controlling women's cycles. But all of these hormones are dangerous, even though the medical community at large says they are safe. All you have to do is read the warning labels on any of these drugs and you'll see they are far from safe. What to do? Work with your cycle, learn about your body and prevent pregnancy at the same time. This is very doable!

Speaking Point: The Menstrual Cycle is the gateway to a woman's fertility and by learning to work with it, to understand it, a woman can master her fertility cycle and avoid pregnancy. Discipline is required and a desire to really be in touch with your own body. This has been a passion of mine and I've taught women how to do this for the last 25 years!

Speaking Point: Hormonal Birth Control puts ALL women into chemically-induced menopause when used for a year or more. What is she talking about??? Does that sound crazy? Well, the defintion of menopause is a year without periods. When you are on hormonal birth control you are not getting periods AT ALL. The bleeding that happens when you stop your pill for a couple days is just breakthrough bleeding, so it's not a real period, which means your body isn't cycling, or producting progesterone via ovulation, (which is so important to your health!)so after a year, you've basically entered chemically-induced menopause. This really meses up women's bodies. The alternatives are much safer and healthier.

Speaking Point: Pro No. 1: You're in charge of your body and your health when you choose natural birth control. When a woman uses her knowledge of her body and works in communion with it, she learns to stay present in her body. She becomes aware of her own ebb and flow and what is "normal" for her to feel and experience throughout the month. This allows a woman to be able to diagnose possible dangers happening in her body much more easily and sooner than a woman using hormones. I was a spokesperson for an Ovarian Cancer fundraiser and learned that this is one of the most insidious cancers of all, and that most women catch it too late, making it one of the most lethal female cancers. The symptoms are things most women experience, so they dismiss them. Without hormonal BC you are more in tune.

Speaking Point: Pro No. 2: You realize you're a woman. Don't laugh. Most women today, by virtue of the hormones, are stopping their periods entirely and therefore not cycling at all. It's a woman's birthright and nature to cycle. When we stop that process, we are no longer experiencing ourselves as women. I had a woman take a workshop of mine who had been on DepoProvera, a hormonal BC that stops your periods entirely. After stopping it, she called me one day months later, sobbing saying "I just got my first period in years. I realized I'm not a man." No hormones means you experience those ups and downs we keep trying to turn off.

Speaking Point: Pro No. 3: It creates intimacy with your partner to go natural. He has to learn your cycle, its ups and downs. When you calendar and chart your cycle, you man does, too, and this creates such amazing intimacy between two people! He will also learn that your PMS is happening for a reason! (See my article below about this!)

Speaking Point: Con: You might get pregnant if you don't follow the protocols exactly as you have to. For women who are pro choice, an abortion is an emotionally difficult decision to make and execute. For those who feel abortion is not an option, having a child at an "inopportune" moment may create financial stress and emotional burdens. An unexpected, unplanned pregnancy is the only of natural birth control methods.

Speaking Point: Pro No. 4: Natural methods of birth control are by and large not nearly as expensive as hormonal methods. There is one amazing device that I own and use myself that pays for itself in the first year, and is more highly rated in efficacy than the birth control pill. Yes!!! This is true!!

Speaking Point: Pro No. 5: When a woman uses natural birth control, her family benefits from her deep and abiding connection to herself, and the intimacy it stimulates between her and her partner. This only makes home life better! On the other hand, Hormonal BC has many negative symptoms, both physically and emotionally. Many women, after having used hormonal varieties have difficulty getting pregnant afterwards. This doesn't happen with natural birth control
