Speaking Point: Jerry Sandusky is on trial for allegedly sexually molesting 10 victims, who have come forward over a 15 year time span.
The victims today range from ages 18-28 years old.
They have all lived for years with their secrets...until now.
As this trial unfolds, we undoubtedly and justifiably think about the excruciating pain these young boys have lived through at the hands of Mr. Sandusky.
And yet, this entire tragedy brings up another experience we must think about...living one’s life with a secret!
Speaking Point: Jerry Sandusky apparently has built his entire life around secrets. Speaking Point: Each victim, attempting to move on, grow up, and have some resemblance of normalcy in their lives, also must have lived with their secrets. Speaking Point: What about the coaches who saw something or the janitor who testified that he saw a boy in the shower performing oral sex on Jerry Sandusky? These people too, have lived each day carrying a horrendous secret! Speaking Point: Have you ever wondered how people can actually do that? Live each day of their life keeping that secret, and acting as if it never happened? Speaking Point: What we are learning from the Sandusky story, is that people have the capacity to detach from their feelings and their thoughts, block out what they know, and ignore their conscience. Speaking Point: The toll that must take on the human condition is frightening. Speaking Point: These secrets don’t go away. Ignoring and detaching from the intense feelings associated with the secret itself doesn’t make the feelings actually go away either. Speaking Point: They just get buried into the burden of one’s soul. That burden is greater than the secret itself. That burden is the loss of humanity…That burden is the loss of integrity. Speaking Point: And that burden is the loss of one's true self.
