What's Your Intention?

Recently I learned the difference between the words GOAL and INTENTION. I always thought that they were the same basically but I discovered that there is a very important difference between the two. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary has a few definitions for the word goal, most having to do with sports, but the definition that stands out the most is, “the end toward which effort is directed”. A goal is an end product or desire. It’s like my goal of going on a tour of the ancient Ottoman Empire. It has an end result being a trip to Morrocco, Egypt, Syria, Lebannon, Greece, etc. An intention is defined very differently. According to Merriam-Webster an intention is, “a determination to act in a certain way”. It is about how you go through the process of achieving your goal. It’s basically the energy that you hold while working towards achieving your goal. Therefore I can have a goal that I’m working on with the intention of being open to the possibilities. It’s more of an emotional state.

Recently, I was working on closing a deal for branding an episode on CreateYourHealth.com. My goal was to close the deal and get a signed contract. My intention was to do it lovingly with effortless ease.

Just a few days ago I felt the power of holding an intention. I started a Neighborhood Watch and set a goal of cleaning an alley in our neighborhood. On the day of the clean up it was gray and drizzly. All the neighbors I expected canceled. I was feeling bad about not reaching my goal and frustrated with my neighbors so I decided to be the change that I wanted to see in my neighborhood so I went and started to sweep and clean the ally myself. About a half-hour went by and a I was experiencing all kinds of negative chatter in my head…lots of opinions about my neighbors and the world we live in. I didn’t like all those thoughts so I set an intention of cleaning the alley with as much love and care as I could. Slowly the negative voices went away and within a few minutes a neighbor boy who had heard of the clean up showed up to help. We had a great time cleaning in the rain and I felt energized afterwards. Best of all, I made a new friend.

This was a reminder for me about how I say I want to live my life. It reminded me that life can be fun and even the most laborious things can be done with a sense of joy if I intend them to be joyful. With that in mind I created a FaceBook page to post my daily intentions on and I hope you can join me. The page is called, What’s Your Intention – CYH Daily Intentions and can be found at - http://www.facebook.com/?ref=hp#!/pages/Whats-Your-Intention-CYH-Daily-Intentions/167072896657912.

Let’s make life more fun by deciding consciously how you want to live your life every day. I intend to achieve the goal of helping people learn about healing modalities (Body, Mind, Spirit) with joy. I hope you join me in changing your life.
