Funny how in our culture we sexualize almost everything, from the way we dress to popular music to advertising and everything in between. And yet, most of us feel incredibly uncomfortable speaking about it. Studies have even shown that men have a sexual thought every 20 seconds and women aren’t far behind.
Sometimes sex is the proverbial elephant in the room that no one wants to recognize. In an effort to get the dialogue flowing I’m stepping up and sharing this with you.
I’ve been single now for close to seven years after a seven year relationship. I’m truly done with being single but until the right guy comes along I’m not willing to settle for second best. Because of this I’ve dated a lot but I’ve not had a lot of sex. Everyone seems to have an opinion about this from highly Christian people who feel that sex serves one single purpose, that being procreation (which takes all the fun out of it), to highly sexually active people who feel that I’m missing out on the joys of life. For me, sex has evolved to something beyond the physical. It’s moved beyond the hedonistic experience of simply feeling good and it’s moved beyond the guilt ridden judgments of preaching moralists. Sex has become an energetic exchange. It has evolved into a sharing of energies on the most intimate level with another person that is something fun and sacred. It combines the primal nature of attraction and desire with the spiritual connection of a joining and truly experiencing oneness with another soul.
It’s for these reasons that I’ve had very little sex over the last seven years. Engaging on the purely physical level leaves my heart feeling abused and wounded and there hasn’t been anyone to connect with who holds that primal chemical attraction for me who also gets that sex is more then just a physical experience. I’m looking forward to the day when the physical and the spiritual come together!
